Falling In Love with this Farmhouse

Updated farmhouse kitchen with white and yellow cabinets. Large kitchen island.

It’s finally time for another project reveal! Need a refresh on our last project reveal? Read it here. We love all the fall colors that we used in this farmhouse remodel and thought there is no better time than now to share!

This residential renovation project features a kitchen, bathroom, and living/dining space. It was built in the 1990s, but was designed as a replication of a traditional Amish farmhouse.

While these homeowners loved the character of their house, they wanted to make the space their own. The home’s functionality needed some work as well, especially in the kitchen, since the wife is a cooking enthusiast and also films for TV in this space. It was not serving their lifestyle as well as it could, so an update was in order!

Master Bathroom

Burnt orange master bathroom vanity. Arch and antique mirrors. Small makeup vanity.

The goal for the master bathroom was to get rid of the tub/shower combo, add a very nice walk-in shower, and add as much storage as possible. We played with different combinations of texture, color, and decor. This gave the room a modern look, without getting rid of character. We went with a deep warm terracotta paint color for the bathroom vanity, and a cream color for the linen closet. This paired nicely with the warm colors that were used throughout the home.

We also added a small and intricate white tile floor. This gave the space tons of visual interest, and contrasted nicely with the paint on the vanity and the wood-look tile in the shower. The clients kept reiterating that all their past homes were dark and they were ready to step away from that. So we wanted to flood the space with crips white walls and flooring.

For decor, we combined modern and vintage pieces to give a more eclectic look. For example, we used modern arched mirrors above the sink area and an ornate vintage mirror for the vanity.

Living Room

Farmhouse living room with wood burner. Wood storage.

Throughout the main level, we opted to refinish the previously dark hardwood floors in a very light, natural tone. The original floors were great, really unique wide plank pine pieces, but they were very yellowed. This choice lightened and brightened the entire space and is also very easy to keep looking clean.

We, again, played around with combining many different styles of furniture pieces, including the homeowners’ vintage pieces, and added floor-to-ceiling firewood built-ins. These built-ins are not only visually captivating, but functional for the space as well since they installed a wood-burning stove in the center of the room. We cannot forget to call out the pretty white brick tile that added nice texture and character to the home. It helps fireproof the area but all has a throwback vibe that still feels modern.

Kitchen

Yellow wet bar with ice maker.

The wife is a bright and cheery person who loves color, so it was only natural that we brought a little spice into the kitchen. Together, we chose a bright yellow for the kitchen island and the beverage area cabinets. This choice added a pop of interest in the otherwise mostly white kitchen. We replaced all of the cabinetry, using black latch handles on the perimeter and a really fun green knob on the island and beverage center. The yellow and green combination is unexpected, but it works so well here and draws the eye to the green of the trees outside and to the green in the sitting area’s rug.

The final details included a gorgeous small-scale backsplash, modern lighting, and updated appliances. We even designed a custom slot for the wive’s cutting board. A special piece made for her by her husband!
